We need to start experiencing the joy of being both embedded in community and connected to the natural world.

Changes to Blue Flag water quality standards

Published by WESSA in BLUE FLAG PROGRAM (NEWSLETTER)

At the International Blue Flag meeting that took place in Brazil in late 2009, the Blue Flag
programme adopted some significant changes to the water quality criteria for the global programme. Many of the changes have been informed by changes coming through water quality research as well as developments within the European Union and WHO with respect to acceptable standards for bathing water.
The standards are now more strict than previously where up to 25% of samples were discarded if they exceeded the acceptable levels of indicator bacteria.

In terms of health risk, indicator bacteria limit values are now:-

100cfu/100ml water for faecal enterococcus
250cfu/100ml for E.coli.

While the slight increase in the accepted levels of these indicator bacteria is
welcomed, compliance at a 95th percentile level puts pressure on coastal
municipalities to ensure that the water quality is maintained at a consistently
acceptable level as all samples taken are now included in assessment. Just one
exceptionally high reading per season has the potential to bring about non-
compliance at the 95th percentile level.
Other changes include the need to compile a bathing water profile for each specific
beach and to schedule water sampling according to a predetermined schedule of
monitoring.

Blow to Northern Ireland's tourism after five of the countries top beaches lose Blue Flag status (June 2013)

Almost half of Northern Ireland’s beaches have lost their coveted Blue Flags because of tougher new water quality standards. The number of beaches receiving the award has dropped from 11 to six, it was revealed today

The reduction in the accolades has been blamed on stricter EU bathing standards introduced this year. The UK and Republic of Ireland have also seen their Blue Flags slashed. The five beaches missing out this time are Downhill, Castlerock, Portrush East, Crawfordsburn and Cranfield West.

The Klein River Estuary mouth opened during the early hours of Tuesday 14th August

This is a historic victory for the proponents of the western breach to the mouth of the Klein River Estuary 14 August 2013

This blog site's reporting and support for west breach has been vindicated. Read previous  posts to this effect.

The Scout Camp (see below) water's edge has now been revived and rescued from the horrors of putrification of the major pollution morass found there last year.

This is the pollution morass (see below)

Lest we forget this is the Scout Camp pollution we been talking about. Reported last year.

Is the Overstrand municipality on the Damascus road of environmental awareness?

For those who have read some of the postings on this blog site, however brief, you may have asked yourself; So what do they believe in?

Well, let us answer that in two words, SUSTAINABILITY & SELF-SUFFICIENCY  as it pertains, primarily, to the communities living within the Overstrand municipal boundaries.

We are all on the Damascus Road of awareness, an awareness, in our opinion, that should be considering the vulnerability and fragility of our limited resources found between the mountains and the sea, on the WHALE COAST.

Where do we find examples of the practical application of sustainable living and self-sufficiency, where do we look to develop this awareness, understanding and inspiration that local government, commerce and community in our region can learn and benefit from?

We can begin with these benchmark web sites and initiatives both global and local.
